Chapter 4

I woke in bed the next morning, only it wasn’t my bed. I looked around. All the furniture was beautiful! The room was huge.

I didn’t hear Will come in, he stood right at the corner of the bed. “You like my belongings?”

I realized it was his bed I was laying on, and I quickly got off it. “What time is it?” I countered.

“10 in the morning.”

“Oh no! I have to get to school!”

“No we don’t.” He quickly said.

“What do you mean? Why not?”

“Last night was a mistake. All of it. Saving you at that moment, taking you into my car, and my home.”

I was puzzled. It was a mistake for him to save me? It didn’t make sense. If it wasn’t for him saving me, I wouldn’t even be here.

“You regret saving me?”

He kept quiet. I could see he really didn’t want to answer, so I stopped talking for those few seconds. I started to walk out of his room. My legs felt wobbly that I almost fell. “Where are you going?”

“Home. I need to tell my mom.” With an instant, Will was in front, blocking my way. “I can’t let you go just yet Jennifer. Please don’t take it as an insult what I said. I don’t regret meeting you, but I regret my presence in your life right about now.”

“I need to tell my mom.” I said again.

“Already done. I told her you stayed the night with Jamie.”

“Will!” I said in surprise he did that. “I still need to go to school. Why won’t you let me?”

“Because you’re in danger just being with me.”

I walked backwards and sat on the edge of his bed. He slowly walked towards me. “Why?”

Is he a serial killer? My mind started to run with crazy ideas. Did he commit murder? Did he rob a bank?

He read my mind. “I didn’t do anything wrong. I assure you.” Will turned his body around. “Stay here.” He commanded. He quickly walked out of the room.

I stayed like he said. I looked around the room. The windows were closed, and they were covered so the sun wouldn’t penetrate through them. The carpet had beautiful designs in red and black. He must be loaded! Everything seemed expensive. He must have robbed a bank. That was my final thought. His furniture was as if brand new, the ceiling painted like a mural with angels, mermaids, and people from ancient time. All a mix of water colors. I noticed he didn’t have a television at all but a wall full of books with long words as titles. I ran my hands across the spines of them. Mythology, Egyptian Times, Ancient Literature, European Literature, American Literature, Yesterday’s Authors, Edgar Allen Poe…so many informative books. He had small statues, a case with what appeared to have rings with hieroglyphics. One captured my eye. It had a red stone in the center, around it, gold medal and inscriptions of a language I didn’t understand.

“Jennifer?” I quickly turned around to see Will had returned.

“Hey.” I replied.

“Would- would you like to meet my father?” I didn’t know what to say, but yes.

“Great.” He took my hand lightly. I twitched again. His hand was cold, but not icy as before. “Sorry.” He apologized. “Its fine.”

Oh my god. This is house is gigantic. I don’t think there was a house this big in Gilroy . There was a bigger wall full of more books, with pivots of dragons. Statues of soldiers from ancient times. As he led me out of the room, we walked down a corridor. At the corner, something caught my eye. A chandelier! It hung in the center of the place. There were stairs that led down, with red carpeting. “Wow. Your house is amazing!” I said utterly amazed. “Thank you. All of this is my father’s collection.” I could tell in his face he was getting shy by my comment. We walked down the stairs, and I admired the more riches he had around his house. When we finally reached the end of the stairs, he let go of my hand to open the door into the dining room. Again, this house didn’t stop to amaze me. A giant rectangular table, with as more than 15 dishes laid out, and seats to go along with them. So many dining plates, glasses, spoons, forks. At the end of the table were 4 red chairs with resting arms, and a gold painted cushioned chair in the center. 2 at the side, and 2 across, and the gold one in the mid-end.

“What are those chairs for?”

“The golden one, is my father’s. I sit on his right. The other 2 across were suppose to be my mother’s and my grandfather. Both of them passed away years ago.”

“Oh.” I shouldn’t have asked. “I’m sorry for-“

“No, no. Don’t be sorry.” He assured me.

“What about the one next to yours?”

He remained silent.

A voice from behind came in. “That’s for his soon to be wife.” We turned around. A man of 50 years of age or more faced us with a welcoming smile. His hair was snow white, his eyes the same shade of blue as Will’s. His clothes were elegantly and gentlemen-like.

“Good morning.” He greeted us.

“Morning.” I smiled.

“Father, this is a friend of mine. Jennifer Wolff.”

The man frowned, his eyes curiously on me. “Jennifer…Wolff?” He said sheepishly. He studied me more and finally spoke. “Nice to meet you Ms. Wolff. Please! Please sit down and join us for breakfast.”

I smiled and agreed to his kind offer. “Thank you- Mr. Hunter.”

“Please, call me Carter. I hate feeling old when people refer me to my last name.” He walked towards us. Carter shook my hand and stood by my side, leading me right next to Will’s chair. I looked down on it. “Mr.- I mean ‘Carter,’ I don’t think I should sit here. It’s not right for me.”

“Nonsense.” He pulled the chair back. I stood behind the chair and sighed. I succumbed.

“Dad, please. I can do it-“

“No, no. You need to learn how to treat a lady.”

I turned red. “I really shouldn’t be here.”

Will sat next to me, while Carter took his rightful place. He shook a small silver bell and rang it. Soon enough, a maid came in with a cart of plates, and dishes for breakfast.

“Oh, wow. That looks wonderful.” I admired the food she carried onto the table. A cheesecake, milk, bread, waffles, pancakes, strawberries dipped in chocolate, and so much more my stomach growled reminding me I hadn’t eaten all day yesterday.

“Dig in.” Carter said with a satisfied smile.

“How long have you been living in Gilroy ?” He asked me.

“All my life. For the exception of 2 years in Kettlemen City, and 1 in Hollister.”

“How old are you..my dear?”

“17.”

“Ah, wonderful. The perfect age.” He referred to me as being perfect for Will. Will didn’t say anything, but continued to eat.

“And your family?”

“I live with my mom.” Which technically is a lie since I hardly see her.

“No other siblings? A father?”

“I’m an only child, and no sir.”

“That’s a shame. You have a rather particular situation, you and Will.” I turned to face him, but he remained quiet.

“How so?”

“His mother passed away recently. About a few months ago.”

That’s strange. Will said his mother and grandfather passed away years ago..

“I’m sorry for the loss.”
