It was a bright, sunny day in Ponyland, but Jellybean and her
best friend, Candycorn, were in the mood for something more
exciting than lounging about the forest.
"We might take a trip to Butterfly Island and spend a day at
the beach," Candycorn suggested. "We could build a sandcastle
and eat snowcones. Some of our friends are certain to be there,
and if we're lucky, we'll see the Seaponies." The Seaponies
only popped up in the surf once in a blue-moon, and they were
very rare. Seeing them was always fun.
It was just as they were considering this possibility when the
phone rang. It was probably the last pony they expected to
hear from - Amadea.
"Good morning!" she said, her little voice sounding very tinny,
as if she was talking through a tube. "You'll never guess where
I am!"
Jellybean and Candycorn looked at each other, very puzzled,
then they both asked, "Where?"
"I'm talking through an old-time telephone, at least 50 years
old!" She bubbled. "I'm over at a place called a 'museum', and
it is just like magic here! You travel backwards through
Time!"
Now, Amadea was a very adventuresome pony, who frequently liked
to take off on her own to explore the Wide World, but this was
something quite new.
"We'll meet you there, then." Jellybean promised; and in no
time flat, the two friends climbed into the Big Van with their
human friend, Miss Daisy, and set off for the museum.
The museum turned out to be a huge place with a huge parking lot,
and when the two little ponies got out, it seemed, perhaps,
too big. They were very uncertain until at last they saw the
familiar form of Amadea trotting down the steps. She was a
beautiful white pony with golden hair and a picture of Mozart
tatooed on her hip, a music note on her front hoof, and silver
hair pins full of diamonds hanging from her mane and tale.
"Hurry inside!" she cried excitedly, "You must see all of the
wonderful things."
Quickly and quietly, on soft little hooves, the three ponies
scurried across the big, shining floor. they dodged the feet
of the Big People who seemed to be everywhere, and who did not
notice the ponies at all.
"Look at this," said Amadea, pointing a dainty hoof, "That's a
space ship that went to the planet Vulcan."
"I don't think there's any such thing as the planet Vulcan,"
Jellybean looked doubtful.
"Yes there is," Candycorn replied. "I've seen Mr.Spock on TV."
Jellybean still wasn't too sure, but it was a real space ship all
the same, and an astronatut's suit was on display, along with all
his special paraphenalia.
"Speaking of TV," whispered Amadea, "just look at all these old
TVs. Some of them are so old that they have tiny round screens.
And they even have a TV camera with an old TV show on it."
Sure enough, it was an old studio monitor showing a loud, fat
man who was telling his skinny friend that he'd send him "right
to the moon".
"I'll bet he was one of the astronauts," decided Candycorn.
Again, Jellybean wasn't too sure.
They wandered from room to room, looking at wonderful models of
old ways of living, all in scale with Big People. "See what I
mean about time travel?" Amadea bubbled. "All of these things
really existed a long time ago, but they've popped through time
just so we can see them." The other two ponies were certainly
impressed, and it seemed as if everywhere they turned they saw
something new and wonderful and very, very old. Some things
were as old as 200 years, which was something inconceivable for
three little ponies.
But the more they explored, the more tired they became. And
after a while, the wonderful things they saw stopped seeming
quite so wonderful.
"This is starting to get spooky," Jellybean shivered. "What is
that strange-looking black thing?"
Candycorn read the plate describing what they saw. It was an
old hearse from a funeral home, and it was 150 years old. It was
solid black, and had big glass windows with heavy curtains revealing
a scary-looking coffin.
"I don't like the looks of that," Amadea shook her head.
"Neither do I," said Candycorn. "Look what it says! They made
some poor pony pull that wagon!"
All three gasped in horror, trying to imagine how such a
thing might be possible. Not all the little ponies in Ponyland
put together would be strong enough to move such a big, black,
frightening thing!
"Let's get out of here," said Amadea. "Besides, I think I've
found the tunnel that lets us travel in time."
That sounded both scary and fun at the same time, so Jellybean
and Candycorn scampered off behind her, glad to get away from the
black hearse. They followed her straight to an enormous log
made of stone. It was extremely long and broad, and the end
was wide and hollow. The three ponies stared into the opening,
which was crusted with sparkling crystals--but the hole seemed
to go smaller and smaller.
"Are you sure this is the way in?" Jellybean asked anxiously.
"Positive!" Amadea trotted carefully along the tunnel.
Candycorn looked from one friend to the other and decided it was
worth a try. She followed Amadea carefully, and Jellybean finally
went behind them.
The tunnel seemed to go on forever, and it got narrower and
narrower with every step the ponies took. Just as they were
starting to feel it couldn't get any smaller, they popped out
on the other side. The first thing they saw was a giant
armadillo.
"Oh my goodness," said Jellybean. "I never knew they grew so
big!"
"Maybe that's how they looked a long time ago," Candycorn said.
"I'm starting to wish we hadn't gone quite so far back in time."
For once, Amadea could say nothing. She had never seen anything
like the armadillo, herself.
"Oh look!" gasped Candycorn, "A giant elephant with very long
tusks! I sure am glad thet these big animals are standing so
still that they have no time to notice us. Do you think..."
she swallowed very nervously, "they might eat ponies?"
"I wouldn't be surprised at all," Jellybean shuddered. "Let's
be very, very quiet and sneak away."
But before they could sneak too far, they stumbled upon a rock
with an imprint of bones.
"A monster was here," whispered Jellybean.
"And even bigger monsters are here..." pointed out
Candycorn when she discovered they were standing among a
whole pile of very large bones. This was becoming positively
frightening.
Then they all looked up together, over their shoulders, and saw
an enormous set of bones labeled TYRANNOSAURUS REX. The three
ponies took one hard look and they all screamed as loud as they
could!
"Run! Run! Run for your lives!" they all shouted out loud,
stumbling over each other in fright, they could not get away
from the monster fast enough, and ran across the shiny floor.
But it was only going to get worse.
There was one last monster waiting for them! Hanging from
the ceiling was the biggest doggone SHARK the ponies could
never have imagined! It was as big as a thousand ponies put
together. The frightened little ponies screamed louder than ever,
and ran so fast that they tripped over thir own feet and
rolled over each other in their haste. Terrified and out of
breath, they found the stone log and scambled through the tunnel
to safety. Once they came through the other side, they did
not stop even to catch their breath. They just kept on
running until they were safely outside the big museum. Only then
did they stop to catch their breath.
"That shark was so big," panted Jellybean, "I'll bet he's the
very same one who swallowed Jonah."
"Who was jonah?" asked Candycorn.
"The man in the Bible who was swallowed alive by a giant fish,"
Amadea reminded her. "That was awfully scary, wasn't it? We
just barely got away from there."
"But it was fun all the same - wasn't it?" Jellbean smiled.
"Yes it was." Candycorn agreeed. "We'll have to come back some
other day. Thank you for inviting us, Amadea."
"You're welcome," said Amadea, but she was still a little bit
scared. "I think it is time to go home."
"Yes, yes, let's go home!" the others agreed. "Next time, you
must come with us to Butterfly Island before summer is over."
And so the three little ponies happily climbed back into the Big
Van and rode all the way home, watching the scenery fly by, and
making all their plans for a trip to Butterfly Island where they
could swim, play in the sand, eat icy snow cones, and look for
the Seaponies.
It had been a glorious trip through Time.
