It was an exceptionally warm day. Jellybean, Candycorn and Amadea lay about Dream Castle, fanning themselves and wishing that the month of August would just go away.

"Remember that trip to Butterfly Island we talked about?" Jellybean said sleepily. "Well, I think it is time we give it some very serious thought."

"She's right," Amadea sipped her ice tea. "If the weather is going to be hot, then we may as well find a good way to enjoy it. I vote for Butterfly Island, too."

Candycorn certainly had no objections at all, and so a decision was made. Off they would go for a weekend on the island, and it would be an adventure to remember.

So they packed a big picnic basket, plenty of beach towels and toys, and Candycorn made sure that their purses had plenty of pony-points (the money of Ponyland) for spending, and off they went.

Now, Butterfly Island, you must understand, was a beautiful place by the sea, just beyond the coastline of Ponyland. It had white, sandy beaches and clear blue waters, and gorgeous tropical gardens filled with flowers, which of course attracted lots of colorful butterflies. A shuttle boat was at the pier, waiting to take visitors across the bay.

The ponies checked into Flutterby Hotel, which was the most luxurious pony stable the three friends could have wished for. Then they put on their sunbonnets, gathered together all of their sand toys and other things, and went out to look for a good spot on the beach to lay out their beach blankes and umberellas. Once they had laid out their own spot, they went off to explore.

The boardwalk along the beach was full of interesting things to do and see. The ponies bought ice-cold snowcones and cotton candy, and rode on the ferris wheel and bumper cars until they were all dizzy and hungry.

WHIIZZZZZZZZZZ...

The ponies looked around with a start to see a sporty little pink-and-yellow beach buggy drive by. A flower-covered banner waved from the back end, and driving it was the prettiest white pony with the longest, yellowest hair billowing out from under her pink crash helmet.

"Hmmmp!" said Amadea, "That'll be Breezy. She thinks she's so beautiful and so smart, and she thinks everyone wants to ride her little car. She makes me so mad."

Breezy certainly was pretty, and her billowing hair was just like flowing cornsilk. She winked her green eyes directly at the three friends amd blew them a kiss.

But the ponies had better things to do than worry about Breezy, and so after buying themselves each a souvenir and a tall, cold drink, they made their way back down to their beach blankets and settled down to eat cold fried chicken, fresh red apples, and cut up a carrot cake for desert.

They sat there for several minutes enjoying the fine, warm sun when they heard unexpected laughter. They all looked up and saw a lavendar-colored pony with blue, green, and pink hair, with beautiful feathers sticking out from behind her left ear.

"You must be new here." she smiled at them. "My name is Dreamweaver. How long have you lived in Ponyland?"

"As far back as we can remember," said Jellybean. "I wonder why we've never met before?"

"I suppose that's because there are so many ponies," Dreamweaver shook her mane. "My sister, Tropical Delight, lives here, but I came by myself. I'm quite alone, so may I join you?"

The three friends were glad to invite her to join them, and Dreamweaver happily set up her own blanket and umberella. They even shared their lunch with her, and offered her two pieces of the delicious carrot cake.

Dreamweaver was garetful for her lunch, and she had something else to share which the others didn't have. She had a rather large bag of roasted peanuts, and the four ponies emensely enjoyed sharing them while they got better aquainted.

"Let's build a sandcastle now," said Candycorn. She brought out her beach pail and shovel, and led the way down to the shore where the sand was wet and hard, and the four friends dug up plenty of sand. Jellybean and Amadea did most of the sculpting since they were the most artistic, and soon they had made a very big sandcastle that was wonderful to behold.

"It looks just like Dream castle!" Candycorn squealed with delight.

"Hold on a bit!" Dreamweaver ran back to her own beach basket and returned with a tiny toy pirate ship, with a very tiny toy pony-pirate on the deck.

"I call him Jolly Roger," Dreamweaver explained, and I sometimes talk to him when I'm alone."

"Does he talk back?" Candycorn started to ask, but she was interrupted by the beep, beep of a horn, and who should drive by, of course, but Breezy.

"That's quite a castle, girls," she smiled, but the four friends though she sounded like she really didn't mean it. "See you at the luau tonight." And she dropped a flowered card over the side of her car, which invited them all to a luau.

"What's a Loo-oww?" Candycorn asked.

"It's a special sort of beach party," explained Dreamweaver. "You wear a grass skirt and a necklace of tropical flowers, and eat a lot of exotic food while ugga-bugga men dance for you. It's a lot of fun, really."

"Well, if Breezy is going to be there, I don't think I want to go," Amadea pouted.

"Well, she did invite us," said Jellybean, and it might be rude not to go. Besides, what else do we have to do tonight?"

Amadea had been thinking of walking along the beach to see the tide come in, and to watch the surf wash the castle away while little crabs scuttled along the shore, but it was clear that Jellybean, Candycorn and Dreamcatcher wanted very much to go, so she was out-voted.

Finally the sun went down and the ponies picked up all their beach things to take them back to the hotel. Dreamcatcher, made sure the pirate ship was safey ashore first, then they all set off down the beach to the luau.

It was amazing how many ponies were there! So many familiar faces - Sweetberry, Wisteria, Cherry Blossom and Heatherwind were among them, as were older ponies, such as Blossom, Butterscotch, Minty and Applejack. Some wwere eating and talking, others laughing and singing, but all of them were waering flowers in their hair and leis of tropical flowers around their necks.

"Welcome to the Butterfly Island luau," ponies Seaspray and Beachberry, covered in orchids and hibiscus, draped colorful leis over the heads of the four friends, and pinned bright flowers into their hair. There were big, colorful butterflies everywhere.

The friends sat down among all the other ponies and helped themselves to coconut milk and steamed crabs. Dreamweaver, who had never eaten a crab before, was very awkward and several ponies laughed, but they were not unkind, and several offered to help her crack the shells.

The host of the luau was a pony named Sprite, but everyone knew him best as "Scooter" Sprite since he was always hot-rodding along the beach in a blue beach car, just like Breezy. In fact, he was breezy's boyfriend.

Scooter Sprite played his ukeleli and sang a Hawaiian song, and he did so very well. Breezy, of course, danced a Hawaiian hula dance while he sang, and she did so very prettily. Amadea looked somewhat annoyed.

Then the ugga-bugga men came out. They beat loud native drums and danced a wild native dance, and they chanted "ugga-bugga-bugga" in loud voices. They were all very big, strong-looking ponies and they danced a wonderful dance. Then all the ponies played the game of "limbo" where they tried to crawl beneath a pole that was held lower and lower and lower... By the time the party was over, everyone was tired and happy, and they all had a fine time.

As it grew late, all the ponies went back to their hotel rooms. Jellybean, Candycorn, Dreamcatcher and Amadea walked back along the seashore, hoping to see little crabs and find out what the tide had done to their castle.

"There it is," Amadea pointed. "Watch how the water washes all that sand away. Isn't it a sight to see?"

Dreamcatcher thought it was very sad, after all the hard work of building it, but soon she had something else to worry about.

"My pirate ship!" she cried. "I brought it to shore and now its gone!"

But it wasn't exactly gone. The pirate ship was floating out to sea, and was a tiny dark speck against the night sky, barely lit up by a moonbeam.

"What'll we do? What'll we do?" wept Dreamcatcher. "How will I possibly be able to save poor Jolly Roger?"

It did not look very promising. One wave after an other swept the pirate ship further away from the shore. Dreamcatcher wept piteously, worried about the fate of her ship. No one was sure what could possibly be done, and the ship just grew smaller and smaller.

Then all of a sudden, the waves began to splash mightily, and the ponies thought sure they saw several large fish leaping on the surf. But the fish were laughing merrily, and as a moonbeam shone on them, the ponies realized that the fish had pony heads!

"As I live and breath, it's the Seaponies!" Jellybean cried.

And sure enough, three lovely sea ponies with long, streaming hair splashed and swam and laughed joyously as they swam closer in to the shore.

"Here comes your boat!" one of them called out to the land ponies. "Catch it quick!"

The pirate ship now coasted toward the shore, and Dreamcatcher bounded along the beach as it came to her.

Jolly Roger was soaking wet, but his tiny voice piped by, "Avast, me fine matey," he said as Dreamcatcher scooped him up to safety, "'Tis a fair school o' Seaponies what rescued me. Seawinkle, Sealight, an' Wavedancer - all proud beauties! I owe me life to them all."

The Seaponies waved and giggled in their sparkling voices; then tossing their green and purple hair, they plunged back into the sea.

"Now I've seen the Seaponies! That means I've done everything I wanted to do," Candycorn sighed with happiness.

Then the tired little ponies went to sleep as soon as their heads touched the pillows. Dreamcatcher said "Good night", and went to her own room, while Jellybean, Candycorn and Amadea went to theirs. All three slept so soundly that none of them heard the alarm clock go off the next morning.

"Wake up! Wake up!" an excited voice cried. It was Dreamcatcher, looking very upset. "You've all overslept! You've missed the ferry boat that left the island!"

"What about you?" Jellybean sleepily rubbed her eyes. "Why didn't you go on without us?"

"Oh, I couldn't just leave the island without my new friends," Dreamcatcher sighed. "I would never feel right to run out on you."

The three ponies jumped up and grabbed all of their things, and they rushed down to the beach. They watched in horror as the ferry disappeared over the waves, leaving them all behind on the beach.

"Whatever will we do?" sobbed Amadea.

Then they heard the horn, beep, beep... and it was Breezy in her beach-buggy. "What's the matter?" she asked. "You look lost."

"We overslept and the ferry left without us," Jellybean said sadly. "Now we shall have to stay here until next weekend when the ferry comes back. We don't have enough money to stay that long."

"I suppose we'll have to sleep on the beach," Candycorn said, looking very unhappy.

But Breezy only winked her green eyes and smiled. "There's no need to feel so sad," she told them. "My beach-buggy has a boat- motor, too. I'll take all of you home myself."

"You would do that for us?" cried Amadea, looking very surprised.

"Of course I would," said Breezy. "What are friends for?"

And she was as good as her word. One by one, she carried the four friends and all their things safely across the water until they came to shore on the mainland.

"Thank you so much, Breezy," Candycorn and Jellybean waved to her as she brought home the last pony. "We'd never have gotten home without you. Now we've made a new friend."

"Be sure to come back to Butterfly Island for another visit," Breezy waved back. Scooter-Sprite and I would love for you to come to our wedding."

"We will," all four returned, "We will."

"I'm sorry I misjudged her," Amadea looked very sorry after Breezy sailed away. "I thought that she just stuck-up and a show-off, but she's really very nice after all."

"It just goes to show that you can't always know a person by their looks," Dreamcatcher agreed.

And so the four friends chattered happily as they headed back to Dream Castle, talking all about their adventures and their plans to go again next summer.

And did they ever have some interesting stories to tell their other friends whenever they were asked about the day they went to Butterfly island!
