It was a dark and starry night.
Jellybean and Candycorn lay in the meadow, gazing up at the
beautiful evening sky, and trying to count all the stars. There
were just too many of them, though, and many of the ones they
could see were winking in and out, and looking so small that
sometimes the ponies were not sure they really were seeing stars
at all.
"That's called the 'Teapot'," Candycorn said knowledgably as she
pointed to a constellation of stars that traced the outline of an
enormous teapot that seemed to fill the sky.
"And that's the 'Big Dipper'," Jellybean pointed in turn to yet
another constellation that looked like a soup-ladle. "And what's
that over there?"
"That's called a shooting star," Candycorn sighed in wonder as a
streak of white light flashed across the dark skies. "I wonder
where it came from?"
"...or where it's falling?" Jellybean wondered. "I wish Dreamweaver
were here with us tonight; she knows everything there is to know
about stars and planets."
"Maybe, then, she would know about those. Look there, by the
Belt of orion." Candycorn was pointing to what looked like a
pair of shooting stars, except these were not falling down. They
were falling up!
Jellybean gave a gasp of surprise as the two stars actually
flew across each other, turned in a circle, and sailed off in
opposite directions.
"They looked as if they were alive! They were moving all by
themselves!" she cried.
"That is very strange indeed," Candycorn agreed.
"Maybe we should go home now," Jellybean suggested. "Stars that
can move by themselves are kind of creepy."
"You're right," Candycorn stood up. "We'll take a shortcut home
through the woods."
So they started for home at once, but they didn't go very far
before they noticed a strange, glowing light in the woods that
had never been seen there before. The two little poines stared
in the direction of the glow, and thought they heard strange
sounds, like music coming from the trees.
"If that's music," Jellybean whispered, "then I don't like it."
"Neither do I," said Candycorn. "It's wierd and spooky-sounding.
Let's get out of here."
They started to trot a little faster when they spotted a clearing
in the trees, and to their great surprise they saw a round,
silver ball glowing like a star. There were little green lights
blinking on and off all around the middle of it. And before the
two friends could do or say a thing, a small round door fell
open. And out stepped...
A pony. A very small, green pony with very big, very black eyes,
and a sparkling blanket on her back - deep blue, with gold stars,
and twinkling as if it were covered with diamonds.
"As I live and breath, it's a pony!" Jellybean gasped very quietly.
They hoped to slip away unnoticed, but the tiny pony had already
seen them, and she spoke in a very odd little voice.
"Xrytrix gootchulu hum neevah." the pony said.
"I-I beg your pardon?" Jellybean asked bravely.
"Xrytrix gootchulu hum neevah--whazzit wizzi?"
"I don't think she speaks English," Candycorn whispered.
"I quite see that. But what does she speak? I've never
seen or heard of a pony like this before."
The little green pony looked sad, then she spoke in a louder
voice, saying, "Please take me to your leader."
The two friends were dumbfounded. "We don't have a leader,"
Jellybean said, "--Well, not exactly a leader. We have a
princess and her ponies-in-waiting, but the Magic Unicorn is
the guardian of all the ponies."
The green pony smiled an odd smile, for she had no teeth. "I am
called Roswell. What are you called?"
"She wants to make friends!" the two ponies looked at each other
in relief, then Candycorn spoke out, "My name is Candycorn, and
this is my best friend, Jellybean. We all live in Dream Castle."
"I live in the planet Poniopticon G3," Roswell said cheerfully. "I
came here to see what Earth was like. Can we be friends?"
Well, of course "being friends" was what the ponies did best, so
at once they invited Roswell to come to Dream Castle with them
and meet other ponies.
It was so late when they reached the castle that almost all the
lights were out, so they had to slip in very quietly. Roswell
was hungry and sleepy, so they sneaked into the kitchen to find
her a midnight snack. Who should be there, but Amadea, helping
herself to some chocolates.
"Oh my goodness!" Amadea gasped when she looked at the tiny pony
beside her friends. "Who on earth is this?"
"She's on earth, all right," said Candycorn, but she's not
from Earth."
"Her name is Roswell, and she's from Poniopticon G3." Jellybean
added.
"Well...oh, she's very cute, I can see." Amadea looked worried,
"but what will the others think? We've never had a pony from
Outer Space here before." But she offreed Roswell some choclates
all the same, and a glass of milk to wash them down with.
"She can sleep in our roon," Jellybean offered helpfully. "She
wants us to take her to our Leader, so I suppose we can introduce
her to the Princess tomorrow."
Amadea shook her head. "No, that will not do at all. The
Princess is not at home, and only some of her ponies-in-waiting
are still here. I don't know what they will say."
"Well, we'll worry about that in the morning," Jellybean asssured
her, and she and Candycorn slipped off to their bedroom, Roswell
trotting happily along beside them, making happy little alien
noises as she went."
Roswell spent the night with her new friends, sleeping on the
ceiling and completely upside down. It looked most uncomfortable
and disturbing, but she seemed to sleep quite well. In any case,
she slept better than Jellybean of candycorn, who kept expecting
her to fall off!
The following morning, they all went down to the big dining hall
for breakfast, and to their surprise, word had already gotten
around about the strange little visitor from beyond.
Ponies were everywhere, staring at Roswell, whispering about her,
and asking all kinds of questions. A few ponies went to greet
her, but drew back in shock when they discovered her shiny green
skin was sticky and slippery, like a frog's!
"Ooooh! That feels awful!" cried Forsythia - then clapped a hoof
over her mouth with embarassment. "Sorry," she added.
"And her eyes! I've never seen eyes like those!" whispered
Triple-Treat, "Just like great big, black oblongs!"
The ponies of course did not intend to sound mean, but they were
so amazed by the pony from Outer Space that they were acting
very thoughtless. Roswell's happy smile began to fade.
"Can she eat breakfast like we can?" asked Wisteria. "Maybe she'd
like worms or rocks or something else."
"I think she eats the same things we do," said Amadea, looking
offended. "Why don't you ask her?" And she pulled up a place at
the table for Roswell, who was not looking happy at all. "Here,
Rozzie, this breakfast should suit you just fine."
But it wasn't just fine, and the disappointed look on
Roswell's face said it all. The fried apples, scrambled eggs,
bacon and toast-with-jam might have been very appetizing to the
ponies, but to Roswell it looked frightful.
"What is it?" she asked. "It doesn't look very good.
So she sat and watched while the other ponies ate, and they
continued asking her questions that she either couldn't answer
or which made her feel very strange and somehow unwanted.
"The princess may not be home," said Jellybean, when they had
finished, but the ponies-in-waiting might be able to help. They
are usually very nice, especially to newcomers."
So they went to the courtyard garden where the ponies-in-waiting
were all playing badminton with a baby Bushwooly and feeding the
goldfish. They were especially pretty ponies, with jewels and
sparkles on their hips, and there were quite a few of them.
They were also surrounded by fat, furry little Bushwoolies, the
darling friends and pets of Princess Tiffany, who looked like a
bunch of many-colored balls of fur with huge blue eyes and
friendly smiles. They did not seem to mind at all being used as
shuttlecocks for badminton.
Valenshy and Periwinkle put down their rackets and trotted over
to look check out the new pony, which of course was their job -
but they were quite surprised to discover that this pony was very
different from all the rest. After a brief discussion, they were
all very concerned.
"She sleeps on the ceiling and she can't eat our food, and she
feels and looks like a pond frog." Valenshy shook her head. "I
don't know where she can fit in. Maybe she should go back home."
Roswell's head hung lower and lower.
That was when the Court Jester showed up. One was a brightly
colored pony with a huge ruffled collar full of bells, and his
name was Harlequin. Her companion was purple, green and gold,
but this pony, named MardiGras, was one of the fabulous flying
ponies.
"What do you think?" asked Harlequin, but MardiGras shook her
head.
"All flying ponies come have wings," she said. "This little
one clearly has none."
Then a familiar voice spoke, "why don't we all stop talking so
much and making her feel so awful? Let's just take her to see
the Magic Unicorn. He always knows what's best."
The voice belonged to Dreamcatcher, whom Jellybean, Candycorn
and Amadea had met on Butterfly Island. They had never guessed
that she was a pony-in-waiting, but the jewels on her tattoo
mark gave her away.
It was agreed by all that this was a wise decision, and
Dreamcatcher quickly greeted her friends before taking a close
look at little Roswell. "You are certainly a pony, even if you
are a little different and come from far away, but if you can't
eat our food, then there are going to be some serious problems.
"I can't go back to my own planet, though," Rosewell said
sadly. "My space ship is broken and I can't fix it. I don't
suppose any of you can fix it, either."
"Maybe the Magic Unicorn can," suggested Harlequin. "He can fix
anything."
And so the ponies, with little Roswell beside them, left the castle
altogether and walked off into the Woods, which were always clean
and beautiful, and they walked until they came to the abode of
the Magic Unicorn.
The ponies approached the Magic Unicorn with awe and respect. They
loved him with all their hearts, for he was the wisest person on
four legs, and he was the guardian of all that lived in Ponyland.
He was as white as snow, with a chain of lavendar flowers and pearls
around his neck. The ponies bowed as they approached.
"Good day, little ponies," the Magic unicorn smiled. His smile
was as warm and kind as a summer day, and his voice as sweet as
Spring. "What can i do for you?"
The ponies knew that the Magic Unicorn must have known what they
wanted, but Dreamcatcher asked anyway, "Please, Majesty - this
little pony fell out of the sky and came from a distant star, but
she has no way home."
The Magic Unicorn touched Roswell with his soft, silvery nose and
said gently, "Sometimes we are brought to new places for a reason,
and if this pony can't go home, perhaps it means that this
is meant to be her new home."
"But where can I sleep and what can I eat?" asked roswell sadly,
for her tummy was vry empty.
"I think that can be taken care of. Come with me."
And the Magic unicorn put all of the ponies on his back and he
carried them deep into the woods. Suddenly there was the sound
of laughter, and happy voices. And in the clearing were two
cheerful-looking ponies with summery sunbonnets on their heads,
and alongeside them were five baby ponies, most of them also
wearing sunbonnets. They were catching butterflies and putting
them in large bug jars.
"I would like all of you to meet Daisy Bee and Avalonia, who
take care of all the orphaned ponis in Ponyland."
Daisy Bee and Avalonia were fresh-faced and cute, and they both
bowed to the Magic Unicorn. "Good day, Majesty," they said in
one voice, "What can we do for you?"
"I have a new little friend for you who has come from very far
away. Her name is Roswell. Will that suit you?"
Roswell's eyes suddenly brightened, for there in the grass were
huge blossoms of pink and white clover. It was just the sort of
thing she wanted for breakfast.
"Welcome to Ponyland, little friend," Avalonia laughed with a
big, happy laugh. "You are just in time tohelp us catch some
butterflies!" And sure enough, she and Daisy Bee were catching
all sorts of bugs with their butterfly net. There were
butterflies, dragonflies, and striiped bumblebees.
"We keep them in bug jars for a while," Daisy Bee explained,
"watch them to see what they do, then we let them go when it
gets dark..."
"...and sometimes we catch fireflies and toads and lizards, too!"
laughed one of the baby ponies. "They are such fun to watch."
"These five babies are orphans, Jellybean," the Magic Unicorn
explained softly. "Daisy bee and Avalonia take care of them all,
and that seems to me the best and safest place for our new little
friend."
Nothing more needed to be said, because already the orphans had
accepted Roswell as one of their own, and she froliced with them,
eating sweet clovers - as well as a few of the bugs, which she
seemed to find very tasty. And if she could float up in the air
and walk underside the tree branches, that was quite a game, too.
She hardly even seemed to notice the other ponies any more.
"You see?" said the Magic Unicorn, "She is right where ahe belongs
and she'll be happy. And the four of you can come visit her
whenever you wish."
The four friends turned around to thank him, but the Magic Unicorn
was gone. He had simply vanished into thin air.
"Well! Well, I guess that's that!" said Amadea.
"I suppose we can go back now," Jellybean agreed. And very quietly,
the four friends slipped away, back to Dream castle.
"It's been a long morning, and I suppose we should all have lunch,"
Candycorn reminded them.
"And I have to get back to minding the Bushwoolies in the royal
courtyad," Dreamweaver said.
"And i have some music to play," Amadea remembered, for the picture
of Mozart on her hip was starting to tickle, which meant it
was music time."
They spent the rest of the day doing the things they liked to do best,
and that night before they went to bed, they all sat on the windowseat
of Amadea's bedroom and watched the bright, shining stars as they
twinkled far out in Space."
"I'm glad we met a pony from outer space," Candycorn smiled. "She
turned out to be very nice. But what is that?"
Over the distant tops of trees, the ponies were certain they could
see a bright, glowing ball of silver slowly drop down from the sky
and land in the forest. Seconds later, it was followed by another.
"You don't suppose...?" Amadea gasped in a frightened little whisper.
"Here go again!" sighed jellybean.
Tomorrow was going to be another interesting adventure, after all.
