Mutou Yuugi




Mutou Yuugi (Yugi Moto in the dub) is the main character of the series. He is a shy, 16-year-old sophomore at Domino High School. Born on June 4 (a Gemini with an AB blood type, possibly reflecting his "duel identity"), this hamburger-loving, shallot-hating, young man isn't the best at school. In the manga, in fact, he is ranked quite low in his class. In the animé, he is portrayed as a genius. Naturally, because of his victories in Duelist Kingdom, Battle City, and even over Otogi Ryuji (Duke Devlin) in his own game, he has a reputation of being a game master, although he is quite humble about it.

Anyhow, Yugi received the Millennium Puzzle from his game shop owner/adventurer grandfather, Mutou Sugoroku (Solomon Moto). The puzzle supposedly passes onto its completer the "shadow games." Yugi desperately wanted to solve it because he thought that it would grant him a wish if he did. His wish was to make friends; he was so timid that he really didn't have many. Even Jonouchi and Honda (Joey and Tristan) were problems for him, bullying him around, until Yugi stood up (i.e., was beaten up) to a bigger bully, Ushio, for them. After that incident, both began to respect Yugi and eventually became his friends.

Upon completion of the puzzle, he was possessed by the spirit of a pharaoh (known as Yami in the dub), though he doesn't know his name and goes by "Yugi" for now). Yami Yugi took over Yugi whenever he was in trouble and played weird and often dangerous games. When he first heard that there was "another him" from Shadi, he laughed, saying that he was the only him there was. He did notice, however, that he was going in and out of consciousness at times...

After some rocky times during Duelist Kingdom, Yugi and Yami Yugi became very close, like brothers of a sort. Yugi is viewed as Yami Yugi's "aibou" (partner). Yugi's mind contains two chambers, his being one containing toys and other objects of innocense, right across from Yami Yugi's.

At first, Yugi wondered if he had any strength of his own, without Yami Yugi, but when he successfully fought Joey at Domino Port, both Yugi and Yami Yugi realized his strength. Yugi knows that Yami Yugi will have to leave one day, after the pharaoh regains his memories. He tries not to show his sadness at the thought.

On another note, Yugi apparently has a crush on Anzu (Téa in the dub), but she seems to have her sights set on Yami Yugi, who has saved her several times in the past (generally in the beginning of the manga).
