Tohru is an optimistic girl, who has changed the Sohma family forever. After her mother passed away, she lived in a tent before the Shigure let her live in his house, along with Yuki and Kyou. She is like a bright beacon of light brought into the Sohma family's dark world, and is the only person outside of the Sohma family to know about their curse. There are things about her mother's death that she tries not think about and, like many of the characters, "puts it in a box with a tightly closed lid". Tohru doesn't want the Sohma family to live in darkness forever, and wants to help them in any way she can.
