Yuki’s mother (to Mayu, Yuki’s teacher, at the parent-teacher conference): It’s already been decided that Yuki will stand at the top of the Sohma family one day. It would be disgraceful if he didn’t have a suitable academic record.
Yuki: Wait…! Wait. What are you…? How could you just decide this own your own? Mother! You can’t just assume without asking me!
Yuki’s mother: I’m deciding for you.

(This is a flashback.)
Yuki (to his mother): Am I……a tool? Your tool?
Yuki’s mother: So what are you saying? What if you are a tool? What on earth is your problem?! Give me a break! I don’t need anymore idiots. Ayame is enough! The head of the family likes you--what more do you need?!
Yuki (The present day Yuki) (thinks): Against her……words are meaningless. She won’t let them reach her, and then……they die.

Yuki’s mother (to Ayame, at the parent-teacher conference): Do you want him to turn into a good-for-nothing ingrate like you?!
Yuki: That’s not true. Nii-san……is reliable. I mean…he’s outlandish in lots of ways, but……he’s not……”good-for-nothing.”

Yuki (to his mother): I…I want to live……to live…in this world……and be a part of it. To do that, I know I’m going to have to put forth an effort……but I think I’m ready to make that effort. The result……might be something that you don’t like……but I want it to be……something that I can be proud of. So, I don’t want you……to decide anything……without asking me. I don’t want you deciding my fate for me. I will go on to college……and as for where I’ll apply……I’ll think about that on my own.

Kakeru (to Yuki): …Hey. Where should I stand……so I can see the same thing? If I could make myself see from their viewpoint……maybe I could understand other people’s feelings……before I hurt them? You surprised me……because you said the same things…that person does. I was taken off guard…so I got pissed. But………you’re lucky. You’re lucky…Yuki. You understand. I said too much, too. I’m sorry. I just…no matter how you look at it, I never learn.

Yuki (thinks) (when Kakeru speaks, it’s a flashback of what he said earlier): The way his mumbled it…
Kakeru: “You’re lucky.”
Yuki (thinks): …without any pretence……sort of made me want to cry. It took everything I had to hold back the tears.

Tohru (to Momiji): Momo-san knew about you. All this time…all this time…*she starts crying* she’s been watching you all this time, Momiji-kun. Just like you’ve always……watched over her! Momo-san has been listening to your violin! She says…she wants to talk……to you. She wants to play with you. She…she wants……to know if you’ll be her b--her brother…!
Tohru (thinks): Even though they want to see each other…even though the ones they want to see are only a stone’s throw away…
Momiji: So it……is true! Papa said that Momo was curious about me! I see. She’s been watching me….what should I do…? What should I do?! I’m so happy…
Tohru (thinks): *She’s still crying* Why? Why can’t they see each other? Why can’t they let their feelings grow?
Momiji: *He’s crying* Tohru. My dream, you know? It’s to be a violinist. I want to be a violinist……and have a small concert…and……Papa and Mama and Momo will listen to me play!…..thank you……Momo. You’ve made me so happy. I’m so happy……because……there’s someone who will……cry for me.
Tohru (thinks): I want to help them! I want with all my heart to help them! Even if I’m told it’s not my place to get involved.
