“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy’s first law of equivalent exchange.”

Edward and Alphonse Elric led a normal life with their mother – That is, until she passed away. Struck with grief, they tried to bring her back using alchemy. But Human Transmutation is forbidden, and for a very good reason. Ed lost his right arm and left leg and Al lost his entire body. In desperation, Ed affixed Al’s soul to a suit of armor. He also got automail, or a mechanical arm and leg, to replace the ones he lost.

“The Philosopher’s Stone. Those who possess it, no longer bound by the Law of Conservation in alchemy, don’t have to sacrifice something of equal value to gain something.”

In order to get back what they lost, Ed and Al decide to search for the Philosopher’s Stone. With it, they hope to regain their original bodies. In order to gain knowledge of the stone, Ed becomes a State Alchemist and works for the military. But the road is treacherous, and many will try to stop them from reaching their goal.

Characters

-Edward Elric-

Al’s older brother, Ed attached Al’s soul to the armor by making a seal out of his own blood. Nothing will stop Ed from getting his younger brother back into his original body. He became a State Alchemist at the age of 12 – the youngest in history! His military name is FullMetal – the FullMetal Alchemist. Ed is VERY sensitive about his height, and will pretty much murder you if you call him short. Although he may act tough, he really has a kind personality.

-Alphonse Elric-

Often mistaken for his brother because of the armor, Al is “kindness in a can,” as Ed once said. Although he’s one year younger than his brother, he is often more mature. He’s can use alchemy like his brother, but seems to prefer hand-to-hand combat.

-Winry Rockbell-

Winry is the automail mechanic that made Ed’s arm and leg. She is obsessed with taking things apart and putting them back together again. Her parents were killed in the war in Ishbal,* and she’s been living with her grandmother ever since. Though she can be scary at times, she seems to have a soft spot for Ed and Al.

*The Ishbalans were a group of people with dark skin and red eyes who worshipped the god Ishballa. On a military inspection of their town, Ishbal, an officer accidentally shot and killed and Ishbalan child, resulting in them waging war against the military. The city was almost completely annihilated once the military sent in State Alchemists.

-Colonel Roy Mustang-

Roy Mustang is a State Alchemist that has the rank of Colonel. He is very respected among the other military officials, except when he’s fantasizing about women in mini skirts. He can make fire by snapping his fingers together, giving him the title Flame Alchemist.

-First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye-

Riza is one of the few women in the military. She is always by Mustang’s side, making sure he doesn’t get into too much trouble. She is very skilled with guns, making her feared by her fellow workers. The reason she joined the military is because she has someone she wants to protect.

-Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes-

Hughes is one of the first military men that you meet in the series. He is constantly obsessing over his daughter Elysia, and often gets on Roy’s nerves by talking about her. He doesn’t really fight, but prefers to stay and work at Central Headquarters.

-Scar-

Scar is one of the survivors from Ishbal. His one and only goal is to get revenge for his people by killing all State Alchemists. He pops up frequently in the series and often gives you valuable information, so keep an eye out for him.

.:Warning!:.
The following information contains a lot of spoilers for the series. Do not read if you don’t want to know some surprising facts about the series before you see the episodes.

-Dante-

Dante, also known as Lyla, is over 400 years old. She has been using the Philosopher’s Stone to switch between different bodies, and is in charge of all the homunculi.*

Homunculi

*A homunculus is an artificial human created by failed human transmutation. Each homunculus has their own unique power that separates them from humans, and will only die certain ways. They search for the Philosopher’s Stone so they can become human, but they can’t use alchemy, so they try to lure alchemists into making it for them.

-Lust-

You see Lust probably the most out of all the homunculi, starting in episode one. She was created by Scar’s older brother, whom she was once in love with. Her fingernails turn into deadly claws that extend outward to pierce her enemies.

-Gluttony-

Gluttony may look like a big oaf, but he can eat through just about anything. He’s always hungry, usually for humans. His favorite saying is, “Can I eat him?” And trust me, he will eat them. He’s especially close to Lust, and was created by Dante.

-Envy-

Envy is probably the most dangerous of the homunculi. He is able to change into anyone he wants, making it impossible to tell the difference between him and the real person. You don’t get to see his true form until the very end of the series, but until then you see his ‘cute form,’ as he likes to call it. He was created by Ed and Al’s father.

-Greed-

Not much is known about Greed, as he’s only in the series for a little while. Another one of Dante’s creations, Greed is “the strongest shield,” as he likes to call himself. I think you can figure out his ability by yourself.

-Sloth-

Ah, Sloth. You see her throughout the series, working as the Fuhrur's* secretary, yet you don’t figure out she’s a homunculus until episode 25. And that’s only if you’re paying attention. She was created by Ed and Al when they tried to resurrect their mother. She can turn herself into water, though I’m not sure what good that would do her.

-Wrath-

Wrath has the appearance of a child, but he can use alchemy. Now, if you read the above part about what a homunculus is, you know that they can’t use alchemy. So how come Wrath can? Simple: he has Ed’s arm and leg. With them, he can use a kind of alchemy that’s pretty different than what Ed and Al use. He can merge himself with inanimate objects and also morph his body. He was created by Ed and Al’s Sensei.

-Pride-

Throughout the series, you see the Fuhrur* acting strange at times. When I watched it, I figured it was just Envy pretending to be him, but it turns out it was Pride. A homunculus is in charge of the military! His ability is that he has an ‘all-seeing’ eye. You don’t really get a glimpse of his abilities until the end of the series, so it’s hard to really comprehend what he can do.

*The Fuhrur is the highest rank of the military. The position is also known as the president.
